Springtime Pet Safety

Hip Hip Hooray springtime is here!  That beautiful Southern California weather is back and that means more time out and about!  This new season is exciting but also brings on new potential threats for our pets.  We put together a common list of things to be cautious of in the coming months:

Be careful with spring cleaning.  Unless your cleaning products specifically say they are dog friendly it’s best to keep them away from your pets.  Try searching for pet-friendly products or make sure your pet is gone for a bit while cleaning with harsh chemicals.  If your dog does ingest a cleaner call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center Hotline (888) 426-4435.

Environmental allergies are very common among dogs and cats, more so than most humans realize.  Seasonal allergies appear differently in our pets.  They may not seem sneezy or stuffed up, instead they could itchy, inflamed or develop hot spots.  It’s important to pay attention to these (often) small changes as your pet could be in discomfort.  If you suspect your pet has allergies take them to your veterinarian or you may be recommended to a consult an animal dermatologist.  There are things you can do to make sure your pet is comfortable during this spring season.

It’s the season to be outside!  That means people take a look at their outdoor spaces and begin to beautify.  That means people are putting out herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers, which can harm your pet if they are eaten.  If your dog loves munching on grass try to keep them confined to eating grass you know is free from dangerous chemicals.  There are new plants popping up and some of them can be toxic to your pets.  Read the ASPCA’s list of toxic and non-toxic plants for homes and gardens.

Make sure your pets stay safe this spring season by keeping them away from hurtful cleaning products and plants.  Keep an eye on your animals and remember they can suffer from seasonal allergies just like humans.  So get out there and enjoy springtime safely with your furry friends!
