Acupuncture has been used to treat humans for a variety of conditions for thousands of years.  Like lots of other human experiences that are now available for our animals, acupuncture has been adapted for animals!  Some people may not think of acupuncture when looking for health help, especially for their pets, but it may be part of the perfect solution!

Acupuncture may be just right for your pet!

It is unknown how long veterinary acupuncture has been around.  Some sources claim it has been practiced for hundreds of years but there is no proof.  Much of the support behind animal acupuncture is anecdotal so deciding whether or not to use it takes careful consideration by owners.  Most often veterinary acupuncture is used in conjunction with other treatments for the ailment.  One of the positives about acupuncture is it comes with little to no side effects for your pet.  They can experience numbing or tingling which may make your pet a little uncomfortable but generally pets become sleepy or relaxed.

Acupuncture is the placement of needles in particular points of the body to produce a healing reaction.  It can be done on cats and dogs but typically dogs do better because cats can be skittish in new environments.  Visits can vary in time length and price but typically range between  15 minutes to one hour.  It’s a good idea to consult your veterinarian before starting acupuncture treatment especially when they have a more serious condition.  Acupuncture can be used to help a ton of illnesses.

Cats can benefit from acupuncture too!

If your pet is dealing with something serious and undergoing chemo acupuncture can help make them more comfortable by managing the pain.  Acupuncture can also help with arthritis, hip dysplasia, skin allergies, hot spots, allergies and asthma.  Finding the right treatment plan for your pet is important and doesn’t have to consist of just one thing.  Sometimes acupuncture is the perfect addition to other medicines.

If you’re looking for a new solution to help your pet it’s worth a shot to check out acupuncture!  If you have tried acupuncture for your pet we would love to hear your thoughts!
